Technically, an estate sale is a sale that is held for the purpose of liquidating all of the remaining belongings of a person who is deceased. Estate Sales are usually arranged by the assigned estate executor. This includes everything typically found in the household, plus perhaps items from a storage unit or safety deposit box. Nowadays, "estate sale" has more and more become the term applied to the sale of a houseful of personal property, regardless of the reason. This encompasses "downsizing sales", where the owner is moving to smaller quarters and must liquidate most of his/her possessions, and "moving sales", where an owner may find it to his advantage to sell off most of his possessions rather than pay to move them. Whatever the reason, when a houseful of furnishings and belongings is held open for sale to the public, many people now call that an "estate sale".
